Bariatric Surgery does NOT make you thin. Most people lose considerable weight but it does not change their eating habits. I know several people who have had surgery and they are no where near where they want to be or have lost weight and gained much of it back - just like people on diets do. There are not only the usual risks of surgery but long term risks to health. There may be malabsorption of nutriends and increased risk for conditions like osteoporosis. After surgery one just remain under a doctor's care for the rest of your life. Add to that the expense. This is not a solution for the average person.
Surgery has not been available long enough to determine what the long term risks will be. It is a major and permanent adjustment to the body. Bariatric surgery is NOT cosmetic surgery. It changes your internal works. No wise doctor would suggest bariatric surgery except in cases of people who are grossly overweight.
But it is becoming more and more fashionable in this "quick fix" society we live in.
People who are morbidly obese 100 pounds over their normal BMI, should be treated for psylogical factors that surgery does not address. These people need a full range of medical evaluation and help. Surgery is NOT a panacea.
Remember, weight loss is NOT a quick fix. It requires mental and physical changes in life style. READ the disclaimer at the bottom of any weight loss program - "results not typical" in small print. You can succeed only if you are willing to change your lifestyle and stop making excuses. Tough Love? yes but true. I was over 200 lbs and have been 130 lbs for 2 years and I don't kill myself. I just eat less and read the contents on every package. Now stupid they think we are. Designer brand cereals and "health bars" that exceeds 3 g of sugar per serving. Start making choices. If you stop falling for the hype in the ads you CAN succeed.
This is the story of how I lost weight and have kept it off. Fad diets and programs usually aren't permanent solutions because you have to tailor your life-style to them. I did it my way and lost 75 pounds, overcame serious health problems and reached my ideal weight and keep if off! NO Gimmicks! NO meetings! NO cost! I had plenty of "reasons" why I couldn't possibly succeed, so If I could do it, so can you.
